For Employers

How to Become a SkillBridge Employer

Four steps from interested to approved — and what nobody tells you about each one.

1

Design Your Program First

  • SkillBridge is a structured internship — not free labor — with defined learning objectives and mentorship
  • Every application is reviewed for substance; job-shadowing programs get rejected
  • Define the civilian role, transferable skills, and assigned mentor before submitting anything
  • Build a real curriculum with clear milestones across the 90–180 day window
  • Map the program to a clear full-time career path, not just temporary placement
  • Treat it like a compressed onboarding program — because that's exactly what it is

Common Mistake

Treating SkillBridge as a source of free labor instead of a structured training program. The DOD explicitly prohibits this — and service members will see through it on day one.

2

Apply Through the DOD

  • Submit your program through the official DOD SkillBridge portal with complete documentation
  • Include company information, your full curriculum, and proof of meaningful training — not just placement
  • The memorandum of understanding (MOU) is the most scrutinized document in your application
  • Your MOU must clearly outline training objectives, supervision structure, and full-time hiring consideration
  • Generic or template-based MOU language is the fastest path to rejection or revision
  • Specific, detailed commitments win — reviewers have seen every copy-paste template

Common Mistake

Submitting incomplete documentation or copy-paste MOU language from a template. DOD reviewers have seen every template. Specificity wins.

3

Plan for the Timeline

  • Expect 3–6 months from complete application to your first SkillBridge intern
  • The DOD reviews applications in batches, not on a rolling basis
  • New employer applications are only accepted twice yearly: October–December and February–April
  • Missing the window means waiting months for the next acceptance cycle
  • Start designing your program at least 6 months before your target start date
  • Use that lead time to refine curriculum, gather internal buy-in, and submit clean paperwork on day one

Common Mistake

Starting the process too late and missing the application window. Employers who begin 6+ months ahead of their target start date are the ones who actually get approved on schedule.

4

Get Listed and Start Recruiting

  • Approval is just the starting line — you still need to get in front of transitioning service members
  • Get listed on the DOD SkillBridge directory and build relationships with Transition Assistance offices
  • Market your program where service members actually search for opportunities
  • Treat recruitment like any other talent pipeline: show up early and communicate clearly
  • Make it obvious why a candidate should choose you over 4,700+ other authorized partners
  • Program quality gets you approved — your recruiting strategy gets you actual candidates

Common Mistake

Waiting until after approval to think about recruiting. The employers who fill their SkillBridge slots fastest are the ones who built relationships with TAP offices and career counselors before their application was even approved.

Why Companies Get Stuck

Thousands of employers apply every year. Only a fraction make it through. Here's where the rest get tripped up.

Program Design

Most employers design for what they need, not what the service member needs to learn. DOD reviewers catch this every time.

MOU Language

Weak memorandum language is the #1 reason applications get sent back for revision. Vague commitments get rejected.

Approval Timeline

Employers expect approval in weeks. The reality is 3–6 months from first application to your first intern.

Recruiting Strategy

Getting approved means nothing if transitioning service members don't know you exist. You need a pipeline plan.
